August brings one of the most vibrant moments of the Basque cultural calendar: Aste Nagusia in Bilbao, running from 16th to 24th August 2025. And from the peace and greenery of Las Casas de Astei, tucked away in the beautiful Astei hamlet in Ea, you can enjoy the best of both worlds — nature, calm and all the festive fun, at your own pace.
Bilbao’s buzz just under an hour away
From our houses, it takes less than 45 minutes to reach the heart of Bilbao. That gives you plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere, see a concert or take part in the celebrations… and still make it back in time for a quiet dinner and a good night’s sleep under the stars.

A perfect day out: from Astei to the Aste Nagusia
Mañana: tradición en familia
Start the day with breakfast on the garden, surrounded by trees and birdsong. Head into Bilbao in time for the giants and big-heads parade at 11am, with txistularis (traditional flutes) playing in the old town. It’s a colourful, musical highlight that families —and camera phones— love.
Midday: crafts, bites and atmosphere
Wander through the Arenal or Parque Europa, where you’ll find craft stalls, food trucks, and the much-loved txosnas (local festival bars), many of them offering food, music and fun activities for all ages. It’s lively, friendly and full of flavour.

Afternoon: music, street theatre or just a stroll
There are over 250 events scheduled: open-air concerts, puppet shows, street performers, magicians, storytellers… or simply enjoy the buzz of Bilbao on foot. Walk by the river, pop into a café, or just take it all in.
Evening: fireworks… or stargazing at Astei
Each night, fireworks light up the sky from Parque Etxebarria. You can stay in Bilbao to watch them — or head back early and enjoy a quieter, more magical show: the starry sky above Ea, from your terrace or the heated pool at Astei.
